Adaptive Steps is a locally owned and operated business by Matthew Soloway, MA, BCBA, IBA. We offer a range of services using Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to support families to achieve their full potential. We design individualized treatment plans by integrating techniques derived from behavioral science. Our services are not only based on science, but they are also accessible! Matthew Soloway, MA, BCBA, IBA
Matt has provided in-home, school, and center-based ABA services for seven years to children and adults aged 2-32 and a broad range of neurodiverse presentations. As a BCBA, he has filled roles including program supervisor, consultant, and clinical director. Matt grew up in Florida and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. During his undergraduate studies, a BCBA introduced Matt to applied behavior analysis, where he saw the profound and positive impact it had on the well-being of people receiving services. Matt chose to dedicate his life to improving the quality of well-being for as many people as he could reach through behavior-analytic intervention. Matt received his Master of Arts degree in Special Education and Applied Behavior Analysis from Arizona State University and has now called Northwest Chicagoland his home for six years. He continues his commitment to and support of the families he works with.
Throughout his career, he has learned that all behavior makes sense to the individual at the moment and that there is no such thing as "good" and "bad" behavior, only behavior that works. If we approach people with the intent to understand them before attempting to judge or help them, we will produce meaningful outcomes and ensure improvement in their overall well-being. This philosophy has informed the Adaptive Steps' mission to empower well-being through understanding and behavior-analytic intervention.
The ABA Team
Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
BCBAs are masters-level clinicians who have experienced a rigorous training process, including field experience and supervision by already established BCBAs and doctoral-level behavior analysts on top of their masters-level studies. Only after they have their graduate degrees and have completed their 2000 hours of fieldwork under the supervision of an established practitioner can they take their certification exam to become board-certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. This exam has a 56% pass rate, which confirms these practitioners have the knowledge to provide oversight of behavior analytic intervention and quality care.
The role of a BCBA is to design the treatment, train other professionals, implement caregiver training, make data-informed decisions and changes, and lead your behavioral team! This will be your go-to person for treatment plan updates, progress reports, questions, and concerns! You will see them while they work with your family! They will implement parent coaching, modify treatment protocols, implement training, conduct progress meetings, and oversee the RBT implementation of 1:1 direct treatment.
Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)
RBTs are practitioners registered with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and are highly trained to implement behavioral strategies within the treatment plan written and overseen by the BCBA. RBTs will work closely with you and your child in a 1:1 setting. Sessions are typically run by RBTs who report directly to the case BCBA. In most cases, each team consists of several RBTs to ensure skill sets generalize. You will see your RBTs in almost every session!
The role of an RBT is to implement the treatment plan. While they cannot offer insight into treatment planning, this role is instrumental to the success of your child allowing the team to meet intensive treatment needs. Many RBTs are also working to become BCBAs!
